Unfit paper currency refers to mutilated paper currency received by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing from Federal Reserve Banks or the public for replacement. Mutilated paper currency is currency that has been damaged to the extent that half or less of the original note remains, and its condition is such that its value is questionable. Since such currency is taken out of circulation, it is classified as nonoperating cash.
